A compendium of Musqueam/UBC related stories.
Over the past year I written quite a few stories around UBC and it’s relation with Musqueam (conceptually and politically). I’ve grouped these stories together in rough categories.
The first story sets the general parameters of the relation with a focus on some of the key projects between UBC and Musqueam, many of which having involved the Museum of Anthropology.
Next follows a series on how the Crown (BC government) Duty to consult when an aboriginal right and/or title risks infringement has been delegate in part to UBC. More than political correct sentiment, UBC (as the Crown’s delegate) is obligated to engage/consult with potential title and rights holding First Nations. UBC’s own Indigenous Strategic Plan (ISP), as good as it is, is a choice made by UBC driven by political sentiments not law. Agreements with Musqueam, however, arise out the duty to consult and have separate from the ISP.
I began a story on how UBC administrative units were implementing the ISP. I managed to convince two such units to work with me on this series and then the well dried up.
One of my favourite series of stories explores Indigenous traces on the UBC campus through ecological restoration, archaeology, and public art.
The final group of stories follows the installation of a bronze disk at the foot of the Reconciliation Pole. These stories document part of the way mainstream institutions struggle to find a way through acknowledging local titleholding First Nations while managing their relations with Indigenous communities and their supporters more generally.
